This is a question I get asked a lot when people visit my blog. This is a syndicated feed from the blog by Hugh Macleod which shows his views on people, business, art, religion, etc. through a series of doodles that he does on the back of business cards.

I originally found this weird little sidebar widget on Guy Kawasaki’s blog. The cartoon that hooked me was this one. It is actually a great insight into marketing masked as a crack to the inventor of the iPod.

This Valentine’s day has made me rethink a lot about my current life and those close to me. I couldn’t see my long time girlfriend Valerie today because of work and school obligations on both our parts which was very hard.

I also saw a friend break down, broken hearted over his ended relationship today and ended up spending a good part of the day with him. As nice as it was to see him, all I could think was how much I missed my girlfriend and it really made me think how fortunate I am to have her (not that I didn’t realize before but this strengthened it).

Valerie, Happy Valentine’s day. I love you with all my heart.

As the day went on, I heard that there was a shooting at NIU—a school several of my friends attend. I later found out a member of my high school graduating class, Dan Parmenter, died in the shooting today. I did not know him well but my heart sunk non the less.

My prayers go out to his family and friends and to all those effected by this. I am struggling to find a state of calm in this and I cannot imagine how everyone else is dealing with it.

Mike, Sharon, and Phil—I am so relieved you are safe. I am sorry you have to go through this. My heart is with you.

That is all I can really say at this point. I just hope everyone can find some closure in this eventually.

One of my favorite blog authors, Leo from Zen Habits, had three big announcements today.

1. His blog, Zen Habits, has been up for one year.

2. He has sign a publishing deal and will have a book published by next year.

3. He has launched a new blog about Writing called Write to Done!

His writing about self improvement has changed my life in the last year and now his announcements are all a big deal to me and many others who he has helped. I take no shame in seeking means of self help. I advocate everyone improving themselves as much as they can without any vanity. 

Though I have been working on my company with my business partner for over 2 years now, I have held the safety net of a part time job to ensure I could pay for my college.

Two weeks ago today I resigned with two weeks notice at my part time job. It was a great, liberating, and very scary feeling.

Today, I am happy to announce I am fully self employed. I am ready to take on the big bad world of self reliance.

To be honest—though I am very happy, it is scary. I still have the bills to pay (especially credit cards) and it will be a long time until I am financially stable, but we are making enough to maintain my lifestyle now that we have grown our business and I have simplified my needs.

I want to thank my girlfriend for supporting me with this decision, all my former co-workers (and now great friends), Ron Johnson for getting me started, Jestine Chakkumcal (my business partner) for putting up with me, my clients and readers, and all those who’s writing have really guided me through this dangerous road including Guy Kawasaki and Leo Babauta from Zen Habits.

So where do I go from here?

I plan to continue to grow my media design company, Clarity Multimedia. I plan to continue writing on blogs and in print and now with more time, I am hoping to have my new novel done by the end of this year. Though my goals are lofty, I think I can make it happen now.

Well, 2007 was quite a year for me. Here is a really quick wrap up.

• Finished The Serpent’s Seed and am revising and seeking publishers soon for that.
• Started writing another book which is a change from my traditional writing style. It is pretty exciting.
• Changed my company name to Clarity Multimedia.
• Created some great website and media projects (thus increasing revenue).
• Went to San Clemente, California for a week. What an experience!
• Started and Ended Blog for Squares.
• Participated in Blog Action Day.
• Started Zen Problog which has grossed more traffic and feedback than any other site I have created.
• Expanded Art of Chicago.
• Saw John Mayer in Concert!
• Finished another year of college.
• Got the iPhone. Boo Yah!
• Publicly supported and endorsed Aldo Fights Aids.
• Found peace of mind through Zen Habits and Goal Focus. 

I have a lot of things on the boiler now. As mentioned above I am focusing on fewer projects and and making them as quality as I can. Here are some thing to expect in 2008.

• Updated design for Art of Chicago
• Launch of Zen Prosites
• A growing community on Zen Problog

• And a few more tricks up my sleeve.
